Organic viticulture since 1985

We love nature and what we do every day. That's why we farm organically and have been a member of the Bundesverband Ökologischer Weinbau e.V. since 2003.

What is organic viticulture?

Organic viticulture is a holistic cultivation system. Organic winegrowers rely on biologically active soil as the ideal location for healthy and stable vines. Careful use of water and soil – Organic winegrowers avoid artificial fertilizers and use only organic and poorly soluble fertilizers. They do not use synthetic chemicals that are alien to nature – a benefit for our soils and groundwater. Prevention instead of pesticides – Organic winegrowers protect their vines from pests and diseases by promoting beneficial organisms, using plant-strengthening care products, and planting grape varieties that are naturally resistant to fungal diseases. Promoting biodiversity – Organic winegrowers create new, diverse habitats for often endangered plant and animal species with flowering green undercrops in their vineyards, as well as through walls, bushes, and trees. Natural products instead of genetic engineering – This quality criterion is guaranteed through strict controls in the selection of plants, as well as with yeasts and other products used.

The ECOVIN Federal Association of Organic Viticulture was founded in 1985 as the largest association of organic wineries in Germany. Around 208 member wineries (ECOVIN certified) currently cultivate 1,619 hectares of vineyards in 11 German wine-growing regions. The products of the members bearing the ECOVIN trademark guarantee special quality and ecological consistency through strict, constantly updated association guidelines that go beyond EU requirements. This is checked every year by authorized inspection bodies and certified by ECOVIN. A visible sign for you: the EC control number and the ECOVIN trademark on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Does organic farming have an impact on wine quality?
Of course: improving quality is hardly possible with conventional viticulture anymore. Organic viticulture is becoming increasingly important in the production of terroir wines. More and more top wineries around the world have recognized this and are converting their operations.

How do ECOVIN wines differ from other wines?
ECOVIN winegrowers make an active contribution to nature conservation: They conserve soil and water and build a healthy ecosystem in the vineyard. By fostering beneficial organisms, they limit pests. Organic winegrowers rely on the cycle of nature. You can see, hear, smell, and taste this when walking through an organic vineyard. In spring and summer, grape hyacinths and tulips bloom, herbs exude their spicy scent, butterflies, birds, and beetles flutter between the rows of vines. The diversity of natural aromas of a blooming vineyard shapes the wine in many ways. ECOVIN wines promise a special wine experience with sophisticated taste experiences, created from a harmonious collaboration between winegrower and nature.

Are ECOVIN wines more expensive?
ECOVIN wines are in the same price range as conventionally produced wines of the same quality. However, you won't find so-called "cheap wines" at ECOVIN-certified wineries, as ECOVIN wines are characterized by higher labor input from organic winegrowers while simultaneously producing lower yields. Convince yourself that the quality and taste of the wines are worth this extra effort and – as with all quality products – justify a reasonable price. Considering the environmental costs, organic wines are definitely more affordable than conventionally produced wines, as ECOVIN winegrowers use available resources (groundwater, air, soil, etc.) more responsibly.

Does ECOVIN wine taste organic?
As a rule, ECOVIN wines taste no different from wines of equivalent quality from conventional cultivation. However, ECOVIN wines often surprise with their diversity of aromas and components, which reflect their origin, soil, and location. This distinctive character of ECOVIN wines is recognized by numerous awards and mentions in renowned publications such as Gault Millau. Due to their striking quality, organic wines are increasingly ranking high in comparative tastings. The mystery of wine, its ability to awaken joie de vivre and sensitize the senses—but also to find relaxation and peace with it—holds a very special fascination for us.
